Use the Shop Floor Terminal to run work orders and production builds
Shop Floor Terminal gives operators a focused place to find manufacturing jobs, start and stop operation timers, report materials used, report component scrap, and update production progress.
The terminal is designed for the shop floor: operators can work from a smaller screen, supervisors can choose whether operators see all open jobs or only related jobs, and corrections can be made without leaving a confusing audit trail.
Work centers are optional. Companies can use direct job or operation assignments only, use machine assignments, use work centers, or combine all three methods.
Who can use these features?
- A Firm Admin chooses whether the terminal shows All open jobs or Related jobs only.
- A user with access to Team Members can maintain work-center and machine relationships for resources.
- A user with Project Costing access can assign resources to work orders and production builds.
- Shop floor operators need Project Costing or BOM access and a user account linked to a Team Member / Resource.
- A Firm Admin can use All Jobs in the terminal for supervision and troubleshooting.
- Users with report access can review component scrap in the Production Scrap Percentage report.
All settings, resources, work centers, machines, jobs, inventory, and reports apply to the entity selected after sign in.
Before you begin
- Confirm each operator exists as a human Team Member / Resource and is linked to the correct user account.
- Confirm each work order or production build is open and belongs to the selected entity.
- Confirm each job has a facility, because material usage and component scrap use the job facility.
- If you want operation-level timers or operation-level material reporting, confirm the product's Bill of Material has operation sequences.
- If you plan to use machines or work centers for job visibility, create those resources and routing records before assigning them to operators.
Turn on related-job visibility
All open jobs is the default. Existing companies keep their current terminal behavior until a Firm Admin selects Related jobs only.
- Sign in and select the entity you want to configure.
- Open Settings.
- Under Feature Settings, select Bills Of Material.
- Find Shop Floor Job Visibility.
- Select one of these options:
- All open jobs — every operator sees all open work orders and production builds in the selected entity.
- Related jobs only — operators see jobs related through direct, machine, or work-center assignments.
- Save the setting.
Assign a resource to a job or operation
Direct assignment is the simplest option and does not require work centers.
- Open Production.
- Open an in-process Work Order or Production Build.
- Find the Resource Tracking section.
- Select Add Resource.
- Choose the Resource and Project Role.
- Enter the assignment's From date and, when needed, its To date and default duration.
- Use Operation to choose what the resource can work on:
- Choose a named operation to assign only that operation.
- Choose Whole job to assign every operation on the work order or build.
- Optionally choose a Work Center.
- Select Add.
The assignment appears under Resource Tracking. A resource can be assigned to more than one operation on the same job.
If the Operation field does not appear, the assembly does not have operation sequences defined. Add operations to its Bill of Material, then return to the job.
Optionally associate operators with machines
Use this option when a job is assigned to a machine and the human operator should see that machine's work.
- Open Production.
- Under Manufacturing Resources, select View All Resources.
- Edit an existing human resource.
- Find Shop Floor Job Access.
- Select one or more Machines Operated.
- Select Update.
The operator can now see operations assigned to the selected machines. A machine must be set up as a Machine Resource in the same entity.
Optionally associate operators with work centers
Use this option when operators work in production cells or areas and should see operations routed there.
- Open Production.
- Under Manufacturing Resources, select View All Resources.
- Edit the resource.
- Under Shop Floor Job Access, select one or more Work Centers.
- Select Update.
The operator can see operations routed or assigned to those work centers. A resource can belong to multiple work centers. Work-center capacity allocations are still maintained from the Work Center screen.
How Versa decides which jobs appear
When Related jobs only is enabled, My Jobs combines all applicable relationships:
- Whole-job assignment — the operator can work on every operation in the job.
- Operation assignment — the operator can work on the selected operation.
- Machine assignment — the operator can work on operations assigned to a machine they operate.
- Work-center assignment — the operator can work on operations assigned or routed to one of their work centers.
- Active timer — a running or paused timer remains available even if an administrator changes the assignment.
A company can use any combination of these methods. If it does not use work centers, direct resource and machine assignments continue to control visibility.
Open and review a shop floor job
- Sign in and select the correct entity.
- Open Production.
- Under Shop Floor, select Shop Floor Terminal.
- Open a work order or production build from My Jobs. Firm Admin users can switch to All Jobs when needed.
The job detail shows the job number, job type, production quantity, quantity produced, status, and operations. The Open Work Order or Open Production Build button opens the regular job detail in a new browser tab so the terminal stays available.
When related-job visibility is enabled, all operations remain visible for context. Assigned operations provide timer and material actions. Other operations show Not assigned to you and are read-only.
Use operation timers
Operation timers help capture time as the work happens. Only one timer can run for an operator at a time.
- Open the job in the Shop Floor Terminal.
- Find the assigned operation.
- Select Start to begin timing the operation.
- Use Pause if work temporarily stops.
- Use Resume when work continues.
- Use Stop when the operation timing is complete.
A running or paused timer appears in a sticky timer bar so it remains easy to find. If an operator already has a timer running, they must stop it before starting another operation.
Restart a completed operation
If an operator stops an operation by mistake, the completed operation can show Restart. Select Restart to reopen the operation timer and continue tracking time.
Report materials used
Material reporting records component quantities consumed by the work order or production build. For jobs with operation sequences, materials are reported within the applicable operation. For jobs without operation sequences, materials are reported for the whole job.
- Open the work order or production build in the Shop Floor Terminal.
- Find the applicable operation, or the Materials section if the job has no operations.
- Select Report Materials Used.
- Review or change the quantity beside each component.
- Select Submit.
The Used quantity updates after material is reported. Material usage is committed from the facility on the work order or production build.
Undo reported materials
If material usage was reported incorrectly, select Undo Materials Used.
- For jobs with operation sequences, undo removes the materials reported for that operation.
- For jobs without operation sequences, undo removes the materials reported for the whole job.
- The quantities are returned to inventory so corrected materials can be reported again.
Report production quantity
For jobs without operation sequences, the terminal includes a Report Production section.
- Open the work order or production build in the Shop Floor Terminal.
- Find Report Production.
- Enter Units Produced.
- Select Update Production.
The job header updates the produced quantity after the production quantity is saved.
Report and correct component scrap
Component scrap records parts that were damaged, lost, or otherwise unusable while they were being consumed by a work order or production build. It does not report rejected finished goods.
- Open the work order or production build in the Shop Floor Terminal.
- Find the applicable operation. For a job without operations, use the job's material section.
- Select Report Component Scrap.
- Enter the scrapped quantity beside each affected component.
- Select Report Scrap.
Select Show Reported Component Scrap to review the history. It shows the date, component, quantity, lot or serial number when applicable, the user who reported it, and its current status.
Correct an incorrect scrap entry
- Select Show Reported Component Scrap, then find the incorrect entry.
- Select Correct and confirm the action.
- Versa reverses the scrap posting, marks the original scrap entry as Undone, and opens the scrap form with the previous component and quantity filled in.
- Review the quantity, change it as needed, then select Report Scrap.
The history shows the original entry with an Undone status, and any corrected quantity appears as a new Reported record. This preserves a clear history of what changed.
A completed job must be reopened before scrap can be corrected. The normal Work Order and Production Build detail screens show the same scrap history for review, but corrections are made in the Shop Floor Terminal.
Review scrap from a Work Order or Production Build
- Open Production.
- Open the applicable Work Order or Production Build.
- Select Show Reported Component Scrap on the detail page.
This view includes scrap from every operation on the job and identifies the operation for each entry. It is read-only so inventory corrections remain in the operator workflow.
Report on component scrap percentage
Use the Production Scrap Percentage report to review component scrap by work order or production build. The report is in the Manufacturing report category.
The report shows each job, operation, component, unit, required quantity, scrapped quantity, and Scrap %. Scrap % compares the reported component scrap against the required quantity for that same component and unit. Corrected entries marked as undone are not included.
The Component filter supports part-number suggestions. Start typing a part number and select the matching component from the suggestion list. You can filter by one or more components.
Firm Admin: switch between My Jobs and All Jobs
When Related jobs only is enabled, Firm Admin users have two choices at the top of the terminal:
- My Jobs applies the same assignment rules used for operators.
- All Jobs shows every open work order and production build in the selected entity.
Regular operators do not see the All Jobs option.
Related features and what remains unchanged
- Work Centers remain optional and continue to manage capacity and Bill of Material routing.
- Resource Tracking continues to manage roles, assignment dates, duration, rates, and recorded time.
- Assigned Resources on work orders and production builds controls direct whole-job and operation assignments.
- Timer, material usage, material undo, component scrap reporting, and scrap correction continue to use the Shop Floor Terminal.
- Work Order and Production Build detail pages provide read-only component scrap history.
- Component scrap does not report rejected finished goods and does not change the finished-good rejected quantity.
- The visibility setting does not automatically schedule work or change the order of operations.
Troubleshooting
The Shop Floor Terminal is not available
Confirm your user has Project Costing or BOM access. If the menu is still missing, ask a Firm Admin to review your permissions and the selected entity.
An assigned job does not appear in My Jobs
- Confirm Related jobs only is selected for the current entity.
- Confirm the operator's user account is linked to the correct Team Member / Resource.
- Confirm the direct assignment uses the correct resource and operation.
- For machine access, confirm the operator is associated with the assigned machine.
- For work-center access, confirm the operator belongs to the center and the operation is routed or assigned there.
- Ask a Firm Admin to use All Jobs to confirm the job is open in the selected entity.
An operation says Not assigned to you
The operation is visible for context, but your resource is not related to that operation. Ask a supervisor to review the job, machine, or work-center assignment.
The Operation field is missing from Add Resource
The assembly does not have operation sequences defined. Add the operations to its Bill of Material, then reopen Add Resource.
Add Resource is not available
Confirm the job is in process, the company has resource and time tracking available, and your user has the required access.
A resource is missing from the list
Confirm the resource is active and belongs to the currently selected entity.
Machines Operated is not shown
This field appears for human resources when machine resources exist in the selected entity. Confirm the resource type and machine setup.
Work Centers is not shown
No work centers are available in the selected entity. You can continue using direct resource assignments without work centers.
A material or scrap posting says there is not enough available quantity
Confirm the component has available inventory at the job facility and in the correct unit of measure. If the component is lot- or serial-controlled, confirm the applicable lot or serial inventory is available.
Correct is not available for a scrap entry
The entry may already have been undone, the job may be completed, or the operation may not be assigned to you. Reopen a completed job before correcting scrap. If the operation is not assigned to you, ask a supervisor to review the assignment.
All Jobs is not available
Only Firm Admin users can use All Jobs. Regular operators always use My Jobs when related-job visibility is enabled.
Tips
- Start with direct operation assignments if your company does not use work centers.
- Use Whole job for an operator responsible for every operation.
- Use operation assignments when different workers perform different sequences.
- Use machine relationships for operators who regularly move between several machines.
- Keep All open jobs during setup, review assignments, then enable Related jobs only.
- Use Undo Materials Used when material usage was reported incorrectly, then report the corrected material quantity.
- Use Correct for component scrap instead of posting an opposite quantity. Versa restores the original inventory and retains both entries in the history.
- Use the regular Work Order or Production Build tab for full job details, and keep the Shop Floor Terminal tab open for operator actions.
What this guide does not cover
- Creating Bills of Material or operation routing.
- Setting up accounting accounts for inventory or scrap.
- Work-center capacity planning and Resource Load reporting.
- Automatic scheduling, dispatch prioritization, or shift planning.
- Reporting rejected finished goods through quality or finished-production workflows.
