Production operations are reusable names for work such as Cutting, Assembly, or Inspection. A Firm Admin usually sets them up with the production lead before adding operation sequences to a bill of material (BOM). An operation names the kind of work. The BOM sequence decides where it falls in a particular product's production process.
Before you start
- Access: You need the BOM permission and Firm Admin.
- Where: Open Production > Setup > View All Operations in the entity that will use the operation.
Create an operation
- Open Production > Setup > View All Operations.
- Review the list and agree on names with the production lead. Use the Category filter and Apply Filter if you need to narrow it. Reuse a matching operation when the work is the same. Versa does not stop duplicate operation names.
- Select New Operation.
- Enter a short Name. Add a Description if the name alone does not tell the team what work it represents.
- Choose a Category if your team groups operations, or leave No category.
- To add a category, select the plus icon beside Category, enter a Category name, and select Add Category.
- Select Create. The operations list reopens with a success message. Find the new name in the list to confirm it was saved.
Tell the person maintaining BOMs which operation to use. Creating the operation does not add a production step to any BOM. That person must add an operation sequence to each applicable BOM, choose this operation, and place the sequence in the correct order. If the work belongs to a particular production area, they can then assign the sequence to a work center.
Change an operation
Open View All Operations and select the operation name or Edit. Change the name, category, or description, then select Update. The new name appears on every BOM sequence that uses this operation. Before changing a name that workers already use, tell production leads and review the BOMs where it appears so instructions remain clear.
When an operation is no longer used
A trash icon appears in Actions only when no BOM sequence uses the operation. Select it and confirm Are you sure you want to delete this operation? The list then shows Operation successfully deleted. If the icon is missing, the operation is used on at least one BOM. Keep it and review that production setup before making a change.
If you do not see what you expect
- View All Operations is missing: Ask your administrator to check your BOM and Firm Admin permissions.
- The operation is missing from a BOM: Confirm that you selected the same entity where it was created. Check the BOM's existing sequences before adding another step with that operation.
- A category will not save: A category with that name may already exist in this entity. Choose it from Category, or review the message in the New Category dialog.
For the next step, see BOM Sequences. For assigning production areas and capacity, see Work Centers.
