FIFO Bucket COGS Adjustment is a controlled finance tool for correcting the cost of goods sold associated with a FIFO inventory bucket. It is intended for authorized users who have reviewed the underlying transaction history and accounting effect.
Use it when inventory and finance have identified a specific cost allocation to correct. The investigation and approval happen outside the adjustment screen; the preview and resulting records help the team verify the proposed correction.
Who can use this tool?
Your firm and user must both have the FIFO Bucket Adjustment feature. The inventory transaction screen also requires Inventory Control Full Access. Limit access to authorized finance and inventory users because an adjustment affects cost of goods sold.
Review the proposed correction
First, inventory and finance should agree on the original transaction, the expected cost, the reason the recorded cost is wrong, and the reporting period affected. Gather the receipt, shipment, supplier, and accounting evidence relevant to that conclusion. If the actual problem is a quantity, receipt, or invoice error, resolve that issue through its own process.
- Open the relevant inventory transaction details.
- Select FIFO Bucket COGS Adjustment.
- Review the remaining bucket value, related transactions, and proposed cost change.
- Confirm the business reason with the team responsible for inventory valuation and financial reporting.
- Use the preview to review the expected accounting effect before applying the adjustment.
Compare the preview with the supporting calculation. Have the person responsible for financial reporting confirm the proposed amount and period under your organization's approval rules. A preview shows the proposed effect; it does not supply the business reason for the change.
Apply and document the adjustment
- Apply the adjustment only after the preview and supporting evidence are approved.
- Record the business reason according to your accounting controls.
- Review the affected inventory and financial reports after the adjustment. Compare the result with the approved correction and retain the supporting evidence with your normal close records.
If the reported result differs from the approved preview, stop further corrections and investigate the transaction trail with inventory and finance before making another adjustment.
Choose the correct correction
A FIFO Bucket COGS Adjustment changes cost allocation. It is not a substitute for an inventory quantity adjustment, receiving correction, or normal invoice correction. Use the record and process that matches the issue you are correcting.
If the option is unavailable
- FIFO Bucket COGS Adjustment is missing: Ask your administrator to confirm that the firm feature is enabled and that your user has the required inventory and finance access.
- The accounting effect is unclear: Do not apply the adjustment. Review the preview and supporting transaction history with the team responsible for inventory valuation.
